Overview:

The original Atreus class was the backbone of the Free Worlds League's Navy during the Star League period. Fast and powerful but lightly armored, they performed well during the minor skirmihes of the League era and against the Canopians in the Reunification War. They were wiped out in the carnage of the First Succession War along with much of the League's naval capacity.

In the 3020's, however, discovery of a set of partial plans for the vessel brought it to the attention of Princess Rei Humphries of the newly-independant Andurien. Seeking a powerful battlecruiser to bridge the gap between the Knight-class cruisers and the massive McKenna battleships, she set her engineers to work. The Princess ordered that the external appearance of the new ship be kept as close as possible to the original, and that the class name of Atreus be maintained, as a statement that Andurien remained faithful to the ideals of the Free Worlds League, even with the League itself collapsed and divided.

The result is a fast and powerful craft, exactly as required. A heavy battery of particle beam and gauss cannon serve as the new ship's primary punch, backed up by capital-grade pulse lasers and missiles. Polarized-Polymesh armor plate gives protection that even the massive dreadnoughts of the Star League era would haveenved. Perhaps most importantly to the thousands of officers and ratings serving on these vessels, the original's greatest flaw - cramped living conditions and limited amenities - has been entirely corrected. The average rating enjoys as much personal cubage as a junior officer would have had aboard the League-era Atreus, and officer's cabins are expanded to match. In addition, the Atreus II features expansive and lavishly-equipped medical facilities and some of the best personal recreation opportunities in the fleet.

All of this expansion of capabilities and comfort comes at a cost, however. The total cost of construction, per hull, has almost doubled by comparison to the original. The massively-expanded weapons suite make one ship as powerful as an entire squadron of the older hulls - at the cost of eighty percent of the original's expansive cargo holds. With a mere 33 kilotons of hold space available, Atreus commanders are much more dependant on continued access to a clear line of supply than their predecessors.
